Why We Exist
Garden advice often jumps from a single symptom to a single product. Yellow leaves become a fertiliser purchase; a spotted leaf becomes a spray. Sometimes that works. Often it treats the wrong problem, or adds stress to a plant that needed less intervention, not more. Part Riddle Gardn was set up to offer a calmer alternative: a structured way of gathering evidence so gardeners can make better decisions themselves.
Five Principles
- Context firstWe ask about the site, the season and recent changes before discussing causes.
- Pattern over partsWhere a symptom appears and how it spreads matters more than how it looks on one leaf.
- Signs over symptomsEvidence of the organism itself carries more weight than the plant's general response.
- Proportionate changeOne change at a time, the smallest the evidence supports, judged by new growth.
- Local expertiseWe say clearly when a problem needs someone who can stand in your garden.
We would rather tell you what to check next than give you a confident answer that turns out to be wrong.Editorial standard
Sources We Lean On
Our guides draw on published horticultural and plant health material, including advice from the Royal Horticultural Society, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, the Missouri Botanical Garden, the University of California Statewide IPM Program and US Cooperative Extension services. Where sources differ, we explain the uncertainty rather than hide it.
Independence
We do not sell plants, fertilisers or pest control products, and we do not accept payment to recommend them. No brand reviews or affiliate links appear on this site. We are a small UK-registered company operating as an educational resource.
The Desk
Field notes editor. Writes and maintains the diagnostic routes, and checks each page against current published guidance.
Reader desk. Reads structured enquiries and points people toward relevant checks or local services. We do not offer remote diagnoses.
